Hey there friends! Well Christmas is in full swing and we are really doing are best to experience the beauty of it this year instead of the oh so familiar panic mode of too much to do and too little time. So today I am sharing one of my favorite Christmas memories from 2017…. If you are in the Washington DC area for the holiday season, or it is on your bucket list, you are going to need to add a day in Old Town Alexandria! Last year my good gal pal Libby and I planned an Old Town day to kick off the holiday spirit and it was perfect!

First of all Old Town Alexandria is the quintessential little town for Christmas. Established in 1749 and located right next to George Washington’s home, Mount Vernon, they pride themselves on keeping the original feel as much as possible. You can find cobblestone streets, beautiful homes and churches that have been there since the start, with every inch covered in traditional holiday decor such as fruit over the doorways and beautiful wreaths. Now of course this town being hundreds of years old and one of the most popular tourist destinations – there have been a lot of additions such as fun restaurants and quaint boutiques – but protecting the integrity of the colonial feel makes it a unique way to welcome Christmas.

Last year Libby and I spent all afternoon and into the evening wandering in and out of shops, soaking up the old fashioned window displays, and admiring the gorgeous doorways. There is such a fun buzz with people bustling around, and of course since you have to dress warm with the cool breeze off the water – you are constantly reminded of the cozy fun that comes with our winter best! This time of year its fun to don your rosie cheeks and have an excuse to pop in for a cup of warm coffee or hot cocoa!

Libby had picked an especially fun day for us, as this was Old Town’s kick off to the holiday season – complete with a parade of decorated boats!

And of course after walking all over the place we earned our delicious dinner of Italian perfection at Il Porte where we could relax, get warm, and share our excitement for the holiday magic that was most certainly found in this cute area of VA.

If you are local and need an extra excuse to get into the holiday spirit – head over to Old Town right away! And if you are not close by, consider adding this to your travel bucket list. It is a great area that really is fun anytime of the year! When we were first married we lived down that way and loved every single season in this sweet place. But I have to say there is something extra magical about Christmas!
