These Are A Few of My Favorite Things

One of my favorite things about being a blog follower is how the experience goes from just following along to eventually feeling like you are taking advice from a friend. As a result of my love for blogs, I have purchased clothes, tried hair styles, decorated mantles, read books, organized my office, discovered health tricks, and become inspired in countless ways! Reading about a solution that an everyday person, just like me, finds enriching to their lives has been really helpful – so here on HALF I thought I would get in on the info sharing action and include a weekly favorites post!  Each week I will share one of my favorites things! The topic areas will range from favorite clothes to organizing solutions to health tricks. Really anything that I feel we just can’t live without – or would really not want to – at the Bessette home and maybe you can find something you love too!

Well this week’s favorite thing is because I am dreaming of summer – the author Elin Hildebrand. All of her books are set on Cape Cod and highlight all the beautiful details that come along with summer beach living. The way she describes the salty air, the warm, sun, the beauty of a New England summer landscape or the taste of a crisp cucumber sandwich….. right now, I can close my eyes and still so vividly see/smell/taste the perfect summer scene she paints with her words – from books I have not read in years! We are summer people for sure – and beach vacations are the preference. Over our 11 years together we have enjoyed the beaches of North Carolina, on islands in the Caribbean – but most often, we join Danny’s family at Cape Cod. Those beaches have become apart of our story – so reading the stories of Elin’s does something good for my soul… just like a day at the beach!

Oddly enough I stumbled across these books by accident. In our early years of dating, while I was still in college, I would sometimes babysit for a family my sister watched regularly when she was busy. Being from Ashburn – home of the Washington Redskins – it was kids of a player, so babysitting on Sundays was on all day event. One Sunday as I was heading over to watch the kids – I stopped off at the grocery store for a few snacks, some coffee, and at the last second this book caught my eye – “Barefoot”. Looked like an easy read and I thought maybe something besides idling away, watching late night TV while babysitting. That evening I started the book and the house the story was set in reminded me so much of the house I had stayed in with Danny’s family (that they had been going to since he was little), I felt like I had escaped to the sandy lined streets of Sandwich, Massachusetts!

From that first story, I went on to read almost all of her books! We are talking traveling with three in my work bags to a conference since I was reading them SO FAST.  Or being on my honeymoon and my new husband asking if we can make a “new reading rule” so I would talk with him or take in a little more of the St John’s Views instead of the pages of “Silver Girl”. The summer scenes, the storylines, the setting –  it is CRAZY how many topics are covered in her books that speak directly to my life. But if I tell you – I will ruin the surprise…. it just feels as if these books were written for me!

Happy Birthday Danny
Danny and Jackie Cape Cod 2012
If you are looking for a great beach read or something to tag along with you to the pool this year – I highly recommend checking her out. And even though I feel like this collection was made solely for my own quick escapes to the Cape – I know a few others who love her too. While they are calling for snow on Saturday AM….at least there is a way to escape to the beach for a bit! Happy Reading!

Thanks for reading and remember to make it a great day!

Jackie
