Today, on this first official day of fall, it feels like the perfect opportuntity to visit what a few of our first fallish weekends have had in store at the Bessette household!
Two weekend ago ….. our first fall Friday, Danny was back to his normal fall routine – coaching hockey – and my office took the afternoon off to visit Clifton Winery for an afternoon of staff fun and saying good bye to summer. When we all made it back home we ordered some take out and just hung around – the weekend rolled in and we were ready to welcome it!
Saturday we had plans to attend our good friend Libby’s 30th birthday event. Libby and I have been friends since high school and as the years have passed, I tend to appreciate her even more. Good friends that can stand the test of time are a rare find in our crazy busy world. We have so many of the same love languages – organization, reading, blogs, magazines, spa pampering, Diet Coke, monograms- that I wanted to celebrate those shared passions through a gift that honored the top 10 reasons why we are friends. That morning I needed to wrap up the gift and run a few errands – so jumping out of bed early I hit Starbucks and Target. Although slightly embarrassed to admit it – it was a perfect morning. Sipping my sweet treat and traveling the aisles of Target, only to discover even more perfect additions than I could have imagined for the gift and so many other treasures I never knew I always wanted – ahhhhhhh its the simple things! The time alone amongst the hustle and bustle of life, quietly observing it around you – something about that totally recharges me.
That afternoon we headed off to the wineries for the big shin-dig and it was lovely! Although a little drizzly – the landscape was beautiful. Catching up with her friends that through the years have become ours, while sipping the glorious wines and admiring the rolling hills of VA, I remembered just how lucky we are to call Virginia home….especially this time of year. We had a great time and were so happy to cheers 30 for Miss Libby!
And the afternoon was followed by a lovely rainy Saturday night where we threw on sweats and found the most perfect balance between napping and watching movies. A tiny fall crispness in the air, the light rain on the window panes and the cozy blankets surrounding our little nest in the basement surrounded by boys – it was a good night.
Sunday I got up bright and early – grabbed a Starbucks (can you tell I have been out of my home brewing pods – oops!!!) and made a to do list to scare all other to do lists! After my restful Saturday night I was ready to conquer the world. That was until about an hour later when I was so sick (super random) that back to bed was the only option. I slept, had some soup, slept, watched some Gilmore Girl’s, slept and by the evening felt a little better. So I did spend some time getting ready for fall. Side note: Target bargain aisles has SO MANY awesome things for fall – you must check it out.
That weekend ended on an odd note – but with Danny worn out from life getting busy again – having a few extra restful days did us all some good.
This past weekend we continued the fall fun! Friday night Danny waited out traffic at his parents after hockey practice, while I logged some nice Bravo DVR, chinese, and contract work hours. Fall has really set in these days and we are trying so hard to get into a good routine that incorporates to dos, house projects, working out, contract work, jobs, etc. – that the one consistent theme is we need more sleep! Needless to say after we both did a little work, we hit the hay really early. Friday night may have been rocking for some, but for us – it was lights out at 11PM!
Saturday morning included a run, picking up the house, running laundry – I know the life we lead is so exciting. But it did get more exciting as the day rolled on – and we headed to the O’Connell football game. This being Bridget’s senior year, Danny back coaching – we are jumping head first into the high school scene and loving it. If you have read any of this blog before you know what this school means to us – not only is it where we met, but the foundation for so many of our most important life experiences – from friendships to faith – and we love being there.
And to make it truly an AWESOME day – good friends of ours, Kyle and Atheni, joined us for the game too! Atheni was as passionate as us about this place and it was really fun to be back in the thick of the action, with a friend who played a huge role in my life at this special school. Plus we love her hubby, Kyle! They are one of those couples that you never run out of anything to talk about or laugh at – it was just a fun afternoon.
Only to be made better by stopping into an old stomping ground favorite, Lost Dog, for lunch.
That night we had dinner with Danny’s parents – but sadly the week caught up to Danny before we even made it to the dinner table and the rest of the evening and next day he was doing some hard couch time. It worked out for me as I had plenty of work and household to dos to address – but the difficult part is the reality of Danny’s limits have really come to light these last few weeks. As more becomes clear I will be certain to share – but the bottom line is Danny’s lungs are just wearing out. They are at the lowest capacity we have ever seen and Danny’s ability to breath is immensely strained, therefore it takes up any energy he does seem to muster up. This is hard and even as we live it everyday it is really hard to know the best course of action. Should we get out there and push each other to live life the fullest? Or do we need to stretch out the experiences for a chance of fitting in more, even at a much slower pace? So for now we are taking it slow and realizing that our quiet Friday nights or our Saturday movie marathons might be a little more common and that is okay.
The good news is the beauty of Fall has found our area and taking in the bright colors and the rich smells, the chance to be cozy with a cup coffee and book, the return of favorite TV and delectable take out is actually a pretty sweet deal – and we have no shortage of fun to be had right here at home.
Happy Fall Ya’ll!
